Admittedly I thought this was going to be about Spiderman 🤦🏻♀️ But absolutely brilliant and compelling. I’m intrigued though how the beautifying argument would hold up against the Leviticus law to not tattoo our bodies?
Spiderman! 😂 That's hilarious. (I saw the movie twice and loved it overall.)
Shooting from the hip on the Leviticus law about tattooing with an appeal to context... The Hebrew term translated "tattoo" appears only there (Lev 19:28) in the Old Testament. And, as I recall, it was uniquely a practice of some non-Hebrew nations to remember their dead. So it is not speaking to "tattoos" in the context that we understand them.
Looking at it through a theological lens, I think it is a matter of liberty, but I do not think there is a law against applying ink to our bodies. Purpose may dictate different measures.
That makes sense and is how I’ve come to understand it. Just that it’s something that gets waved at me as a tattoo-curious Christian. Funnily enough the same people who do that aren’t up for me disappearing every month for a week or so because I’ve become “unclean”. Are they been biblical or middle class and British?

Is "shooting from the hip" an understood idiom in the UK?
Yes 😁

> our bodies are indeed temples
Maybe yours. My body is a crackhouse at best.
It's the cracks that let the light in
